Maintained by the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land, this holy site is home to many treasures of the faith. Mass is celebrated here this day. From here, we enjoy panoramic views of the Jordan Valley, Jericho, and the Dead Sea, and on clear days, even Jerusalem and Bethlehem can be seen from this vantage point! This afternoon we travel north to Jerash, one of the best-preserved cities of the Roman Decapolis. Referenced in the gospels of Mark and Mathew, Jerash stands as a witness to the transition of Greco-Roman civilization to Christian culture. We visit Hadrian’s Arch, explore the Oval Plaza, and visit the remains of several Byzantine churches built between the 4th and 6th centuries. We see the Church of St. Theodore and Church of Sts. Cosmos and Damian as well as the Cathedral Complex where over a dozen churches once served a vibrant Christian population. This evening, we cross the border between Jordan and Israel via the Sheik Hussein Bridge which links the Jordan Valley with the region of Galilee – a symbolic connection of two lands central to salvation history: Jordan, rooted in Old Testament history and Israel, the land of Christ’s ministry.
